Backups Beyond
We love it when a backup plan comes together.
What, exactly, is a Backup?
What qualifies as a Backup, you ask? Well, let me place you in a hypothetical scenario: it’s a peaceful day, the birds are singing, the data is humming along nicely on the server, then suddenly… Godzilla! Our datacentre is the monster’s newest chew toy. Horrifying, right? Of course, we like to believe giant amphibian reptiles won’t interrupt your business operations, but let’s face it, the world can throw some pretty unexpected curveballs.
Now, imagine if, amidst the catastrophic monster attack, all your precious, irreplaceable data was stored in just that one ill-fated place. Woah, that escalated quickly, didn’t it? But fear not, for we offer beautiful apocalypse-proof backup plans.
Here at The Good Cloud, we see backups as less ‘dull data duplication’ and more ‘fail-safe time-travelling machines’. We define a backup as “a teleporter of data to another safer realm, allowing one to restore said data from a specific moment in time” (because everyone should have the opportunity to relive their glory days when they defeated Godzilla, right?). We’ve lovingly dubbed this concept “historical backups.” (Though Julia will always insist on calling it The Time-Travel Chronicles of Data)
In the upcoming sections, we shall embark on an epic journey through the multifaceted world of data duplication. On our quest, we’ll seek to unravel the bewildering wizardry behind how historical backups are created. Strap on your time-travelling helmets, and let’s tackle this digital monster together!

The Time-Travel Chronicles of Data
Otherwise, known as “historical backups”
As a valued member of our Good Office Online family, at its most basic, every business account gets their data treated with the same fantastical level of care. Your data is whisked off on a journey not once, but twice, ensuring no information is ever truly lost. Even in the improbable event of Godzilla’s second coming or a Martian invasion (we’ve seen enough sci-fi to know better than to rule it out).
Firstly, your data enjoys a pleasant journey within the same premises, being copied onto our robust in-house backup system in the same datacentre. This is a bit like making sure you always have an extra pair of socks at hand: you know, just in case a sock-devouring gremlin really does exist.
Next, the data is secretly whisked away on an exciting mission to an Online Backup Lair. Here, your historical backups are safeguarded, ensuring they stand the test of time. They’re stored as meticulously as the precious artefacts in a museum, and ready to be pulled out and admired whenever required.
But that’s not all. Any offline backups (you know, in case of global internet blackouts and zombie uprisings), take the form of precious film reels (tape storage) at our supersecure data redoubt in a remote undisclosed location.
So rest assured, regardless of what sort of calamity may befall the world, your data’s safety is always our priority. Because at The Good Cloud, we’ve got your digital backs. And fronts. And everything in-between. (Nerd-prepping for the win)
In the world of Good Office Online, home of digital adventurers and open-source enthusiasts, we’re all about making sure your data’s voyage is smooth and consistent. It’s business Backup plans… but with a dash of charm.
Every plan we offer comes with an essential life support system: The Minimum Online Backup. Kind of like our standard issue oxygen supply. Now, the story of backing up your data in The Good Cloud Universe spans across different dimensions.
Here’s the short version:
- Minimum Online Backup: Happens every fortnight(14 days), like clockwork.
- Backups Beyond Online (Full Online Backup) A robust 7 yearly, 3 monthly and every fortnight (14 days).
- Backups Beyond Offline (Full Offline Backup) Completely customized to your requirements.
These are the default settings, but remember: we’re flexible. Just like the cosmos.
TL;DR: We have fully customisable versioning, deletion retention, online and offline backup plans on offer. Contact us to discuss your needs.
Time Jumps
With Backups Beyond Offline (the Full Offline Backup plan) activated, you’ll get fine-grained control over the incrementally expanding time jumps between Backups, expanding up to 7 years.
The Glorious Defaults:
- We’re basically running a daily chronicle of your journey. (Daily)
- The oldest Backup, after 14 days, is replaced by a new entry. (Every 14 days)
- Every month, one of these daily backups gets a promotion. It’s beamed up to a higher category and saved separately: a triumvirate of these monthly Backups we keep. (Monthly)
- And just like the celestial bodies, we mark time: once a year: with a pivotal backup. (Yearly)
- We cherish these milestones and save up to 7 of these annual chronicles. (7 years of backups)
Technology may not have given us time machines, yet… But with The Good Cloud, you can jump back to a version of your data from the past 14 days, or choose a snapshot from any of the last 3 months. If you want to rewind even further, we’ve got yearly snapshots too.
If your business odyssey requires a customized flight plan for backups, no worries! We’ll gauge the space your data will use in this universe and map out a ‘reserved sector’ for your backups. This will be priced based on a Terabyte, tailored to your unique shift to light speed.
The (storage)spacetime hypothesis
Here’s a scenario:
- Time Jump Schedule’: Let’s say you want to store 30 daily backups, 12 monthly and 1 yearly. A time-loop meticulously tailored to your liking.
- ‘Resources Plotting’: Based on your data’s evolutionary process and anticipated growth: we’d compute the required (storage) space: perhaps something like 2Tb (example, not an actual calculation).
- ‘Space Money Calculator’: Then, we’d offer you a hyperspace rental rate, calculated on this 2Tb. This could be something akin to 2x 40 euros per month times 12 months.
This universal flexibility allows you to align your backups with your business’ interstellar voyage as you see fit. You’d pick the time jumps, but do keep in mind that your quantum of hyperspace (2Tb in our example) has its limits. (But it’s not the final frontier, it can, of course, be expanded.)
If we notice a black hole of data building up, threatening to exceed your hyperspace limit, we won’t leave you in deep space! We’ll send out a distress signal right away, illuminating all possible adjustment routes, be it rescheduling your time-loops or expanding your slice of hyperspace. (If it turns out you need more storage space, we’ll sort it with you.)
With The Good Cloud Company, you’re not just buying a backup solution. You’re embarking on a bespoke, safely navigated journey, far away from the clutches of the bigtech galaxies, buoyed by Europe’s privacy laws.
It’s spacetime…the highly customizable final frontier.
Spacetime Recovery Protocols
Just like your favourite sci-fi time travel series, every moment a full backup is made, it becomes a point-in-time, a fixed point in space, ready for disaster recovery. Once this temporal snapshot is created (our daily backup at 03:00, for instance), any data that mutates or changes after that (like, at 18:00) won’t be included in that specific restore point.
We find this level of precision as powerful as a starship’s deflector shields for prospective disaster recoveries. Connected with Nextcloud’s built-in retention time and trash-bin function, you’ve got a granular defence shield of protection across your space timeline.
‘Mayday’ protocols: SLAs & Disaster Recovery Strategies
Service-Level Agreements (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Service-level_agreement) are like a signed intergalactic treaty. (Sort of. Trying to keep this fun.) Available upon request, they pave a clear route through any possible wormholes. Ditto for our Disaster Recovery Strategies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disaster_recovery): we’re versatile, like a multipurpose spacecraft canister!
To launch you into our universe with a rough star map, here’s what we typically aim for:
• RTO (Recovery Time Objective): Consider this to be the Millennium Falcon’s hyperdrive. We shoot for an engaging time between 1-5 working days (Central European Time).
• RPO (Recovery Point Objective): Our daily hyperspace jump through spacetime, not exceeding a 24-hour cycle. That means, in the worst-case scenario, we can re-establish data from 24 hours ago.
Infrastructure Redundancy
Data is stored on a storage system which makes multiple copies of data to multiples storage nodes for the purpose of redundancy. As this contains only real-time data (for example, every single letter you type as you’re typing), infrastructure redundancy is not viewed as part of historical backups. It’s an entirely different tale to tell.
Continuous Time-Travel Human Error File Recovery
File versioning and deleted files retention
This usually serves as your most directly available Real-time Human Error Recovery Options. This ingenious system makes even the smallest human error irrelevant, much like a carefully managed time paradox. Designed by our best technomancers (Our Nextcloud developer friends), this recalls lost data from a parallel dimension of versions in real-time.
Think of it as the TARDIS for your files, keeping a multitude of past versions available, ready to swoop in and save the day. Tailored to your needs, it’s file retention and versioning, with a side-order of time travel.
Our clever little set up has a precise method:
• From the moment you start creating a file, one alternate version is retained.
• After the first 10 seconds, one new version per every 2 seconds is retained.
• The first minute, one version every 10 seconds.
• The first hour, one version every minute.
• For the first 24 hours, one version every hour.
• For the first 30 days, one version daily.
• After the first 30 days, one version weekly.
Just be mindful, like all time-travelling devices, there are rules to play by: as it doesn’t copy data to a separate storage instance, it should not be used for disaster recovery or historical backups. This is intended for quick single file or folder recovery.
Think this sounds complex? We’ve got guides to help you navigate this timey-wimey stuff. Check out Nextcloud’s versioning document for the nitty-gritty details, or contact our resident timespace guides.
You may be wondering about protection against accidental deletion. Fear not, for we’ve got our own personal black hole where deleted data goes to the user trash bin. For each user account, the bin catches and holds deleted items, providing a safety net against accidental erasure.
Catch how it works here: Nextcloud’s trashbin FAQ. Or, as ever, our kind and knowledgeable support staff are on hand to guide you through the in’s and out’s. At The Good Cloud, we’ve got your back, your past, present, and future.
All of this can be set to your specifications.
