A Quest for Sustainable Altruism

Changes to Free Tier accounts

We have provided free accounts for over ten years now to everyone who wants one, and we now cater to tens of thousands of very friendly and eager users, and the number of users keeps growing exponentially.

Unfortunately, to be completely honest, the sheer size of the influx has been an unsustainable endeavour from the start. The conversion to paid customers is far from optimal, and unlike the larger document hosting players, we only accept money as payment and not user data. We’ve always told ourselves we’d do this instead of any traditional online marketing, which is a privacy-violating minefield, but it is not working. So, at this point, we have to admit, it truly undermines our financial stability in ways that impacts us all on a personal level.

This has placed us at a difficult crossroad. Should we shut down the free-tier account hosting entirely? Not a fun decision to have to make. We adore our free tier users. Many of whom are very helpful and considerate. It caters to a delightfully eclectic range of users. Everything from musicians sharing sheet music, to authors, and kids doing homework.

So, after putting off the decision for too long, we’ve now opted to very openly build something that can be sustained while retaining the altruism we can afford; because, frankly, we don’t like that privacy is a luxury.

TrialAccount

As such, we’re changing the lifespan of the free tier accounts. These will become a TrialAccount. As the name suggests, it will be time-limited. For six months, you get the regular free-tier account, with all the usual features, but after that, you’ll have to decide to either, create a new TrialAccount, or opt for one of the paid subscriptions.

PersonalStorage

To make this easier, we’ve created and divided our services into new products. The simplest option for free-tier users will be to pay for our new PersonalStorage subscription. This will make your account permanent for as long as you choose to subscribe, and you can choose a storage expansion. Everything will remain on the same, large shared server on our infrastructure, your syncs, shares, data, will stay as it is, but you’ll have a bit more space depending on the subscription you’ve chosen.

One of the benefits is that you’ll easily be able to expand according to your usage, can be paid for with a monthly payment, and you don’t need to transfer anything. The drawback is that your account will remain on a shared server with shared resources and no customisation options.

This is to cater to those who just want a bit more space, but don’t feel a need for the full dedicated private server we offer in our regular subscriptions.

FamilyCloud

In order to differentiate, we’ve christened the subscriptions for those dedicated servers FamilyCloud, which are independent little servers deployed on our infrastructure with their own resources, customisation options, support, room for multiple users, apps that can be enabled on request. Even the possibility to use your own domain if you have one. These are a bit more secure, have their own domains (Either a cloud.example.com type of domain or an example.thegood.cloud one), and are designed for group usage. Everything from projects, to families. Regardless of whom you consider family.

GoodOffice online

But if, now that you’re reading this, you’ve realized you’ve been using our free-tier services for your business, you’re certainly not the first. I’d like to point out that we also offer a larger, business orientated, dedicated server environment completely custom to your needs, named ‘GoodOffice online’. More details here.

Thank you

Truly, while it has been stressful to offer such a service completely free of charge, on such a large scale, next to our already significant workload, it has been quite the chaotic adventure, and we’ve met some lovely folks along the way.

While we ask that you consider one of our paid products to support us, if that is not an option for you, please feel very welcome to keep using TrialAccounts for as long as you’d like.

With these changes and options, we genuinely aim to continue our mission to provide privacy-friendly services to all, in a charitable but more sustainable manner.
